IEP Preparation

preparing for an iep meeting

Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings are an important part of the special education process. These meetings bring together parents and school staff to discuss a child's educational needs, services, and progress. Preparing in advance can help parents participate more confidently in the discussion and better understand the decisions being made about their child's education.

what parents may bring to an IEp mEETING

Preparing documents and notes ahead of time can help parents participate more effectively during the meeting and ensure that important questions are addressed.

 • Copies of recent school evaluations or reports
• Notes about concerns regarding the child's progress
• Questions about services, goals, or classroom support
• Communication records between the parent and the school
• Any outside reports from therapists or medical providers

HOW CALMSTART SUPPORT PARENTS

Through the CalmStart Parent Coaching Program, parents may receive guidance to help them prepare for upcoming school meetings. Preparation can help parents better understand the meeting process, organize their documentation, and identify important questions they would like to discuss with the school team.

Support may include:

• Reviewing school documents prior to the meeting
• Helping parents organize notes and concerns
• Identifying questions parents may want to ask the school team
• Explaining common special education terminology used during meetings
