Parents sometimes become concerned that their child may be struggling academically, behaviorally, or developmentally in school. In these situations, a school evaluation may help determine whether the child qualifies for additional educational support services. Understanding how to request an evaluation can help parents begin the process of identifying their child's educational needs.
📘 Understanding School Evaluations
If parents believe their child may need additional educational support, they may submit a written request asking the school to conduct an evaluation. The purpose of the evaluation is to determine whether the child qualifies for special education services and to identify the types of support that may be needed.
🧠 Parents May Request an Evaluation When:
📚 Academic Concerns
A child is struggling academically.
⚠️ Behavior or Attention Concerns
A child is having difficulty with behavior or attention.
🧩 Developmental Concerns
A child may have a developmental delay.
📉 Lack of Progress
A child is not making expected progress in school.
📝 Parent Concern
A parent believes additional educational support may be needed.

After a parent submits a request for an evaluation, the school reviews the request and determines the next steps in the evaluation process. This process may include gathering information about the child's academic performance, behavior, and developmental needs.
The evaluation process may include:
• Reviewing classroom performance and school records
• Conducting academic or developmental assessments
• Observations by school staff
• Input from teachers and parents
• Meetings to review evaluation results
Through the CalmStart Parent Coaching Program, parents may receive guidance to help them understand the evaluation process and prepare for discussions with school staff. Support focuses on helping families organize information, understand school procedures, and communicate their concerns clearly during the evaluation process.
Support may include:
• Helping parents understand the steps involved in requesting an evaluation
• Reviewing school documents related to the evaluation process
• Helping parents organize questions and concerns for school meetings
• Explaining common terms used during the evaluation process
